An Open Source Approach to Collaboration

Document Actions

Open Source is an increasingly popular concept, but what does it really mean? And how does Open Source collaboration happen? This presentation and overview provides insight in a way meant to help you apply the lessons to your own collaborations.

How does open source software happen? What can we learn from it for cross-organizational collaboration? In this presentation, ifPeople cofounders Tirza Hollenhorst and Christopher Johnson talk about what open source is, the process by which it is created through a voluntary community, and a concrete process that can be used in any project (even non-software projects) to "social source" the project.

The process of Open Source collaboration is somewhat chaotic and open to chance. Every project is different and driven by committed and passionate people. Remember the Apache project mentioned in the presentation? To get a better sense of how that looks, check out the visual representation of project contributions below (known as a "code_swarm" for the software used to create this video). This shows the people, the files, the timeline for the Apache project. The video includes notes about what each aspect means. Enjoy!
