by Admin last modified 2004-10-22 17:29

Plone, the leading Open Source Content Management System (CMS), and part of ifPeople's preferred Web technology platform, has continued to gain momentum over the last few months with its adoption by major IT service vendor Computer Associates, the publication of a complete developer's guide, and the realization of the community's second annual conference in Vienna.

Plone

Rated one of the most popular Open Source projects by developers, Plone has achieved amazing successes and growth.  Built on a robust platform and with its special attention to usability and Web standards, it has become a product of choice for many developers and companies.  Recently the Open Source project has received a number of boosts and continues to achieve new successes.

Plone Conference

This year the second annual Plone conference took place in Vienna, Austria, starting September 20. The conference focused primarily on the people that make Plone what it is—the developers and contributors to the finished product. In addition to this focus, material was also included to benefit those in business and politics who have adopted Plone within their organizations.  The conference included a tutorial track and a track dedicated to history, use-cases, and demonstrations of what Plone can do.  The conference featured releases of new products to enhance the system, as well as work on Zope and Python, the dependent technologies.  For more see:

New Plone Guide

With the success of Plone, more documentation to make it more accessible and useful to a broader community has been necessary.  The Definitive Guide to Plone provides the reader with a reference manual on this technology and an update for the 2.0 version of Plone, which includes many enhancements.  This unique guide to Plone covers everything from installing Plone (on Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux) to writing code for the system. As part of the Apress library of Python programming and content management tools, The Definitive Guide to Plone isauthored by a member of Plone's coredevelopment team, Andy McKay.  He emphasizes the customization of Plone and shows how to fully integrate Plone into an existing website and application.  Andy McKay is a principal of Agmweb Consulting, and an active contributor to a variety of Python-based open source projects. McKay maintains ZopeZen.org, a web site dedicated to Zope-based applications and Zope extensions.

Plone at ifPeople

Plone embodies the values and standards of ifPeople into its development path.  It also provides extensibility and flexibility necessary to make it work for diverse clients.  ifPeople has worked to improve the CMS and its products, and to provide training and documentation for a broader audience with this technology.  Plone is behind several new ifPeople projects, and ifPeople will be releasing new products to the Open Source community that were developed for this purpose.
