The first public release of the new Web site for Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR), which provides a new design, functionality, and coding standard to the site and was created by ifPeople, was made public in conjunction with the organization’s annual meeting in October. The site is built with the Open Source content management system Plone, and is the result of an extended period of dialog with the organization and its stakeholders. The site includes custom functionality and products developed by ifPeople that will be available as Free Software.

Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility, CPSR, chose ifPeople to provide the international organization with a new Web site that implemented Free Software technologies that make it easier to maintain content, implement a standards-compliant design, and drive organizational membership.  The resulting site can be seen at www.cpsr.org .

Some of the principles features of the site include:
  • Accessibility of the design (Section 508) and Search Engine Optimization
  • Open Source and Free Software tools
  • Standards compliant coding (XHTML 1.0 and CSS)
  • Member management and security tools
The site also involved the custom development of products for the Plone CMS that make it easier to manage the presentation of diverse content, add keywords to content, and provides a rotating quotation feature.  These products will be released as a part of ifPeople’s contribution to the Free Software community and the success of Plone.

In addition to the technology, ifPeople also helped CPSR to establish processes and strategies for maintaining the site with its diverse and dispersed stakeholders.  Such is the case with the Issues area, where members and Working Groups participate in contributing content, and the Local Chapters, where local leaders are responsible for content and have an easy way to publish content.

The site, currently in its first release, will include future implementations of member-only tools for communication and exchange, management by the Board, and integrated mailing list management.  If you have any comments about the current implementation of the site, please contact cjj (a) ifPeople.net.  Also, please consider joining CPSR to support its mission in making technology socially responsible.
