Dr. Khalid Saeed won the prestigious Jay Wright Forrester Award given to outstanding contributions to the field of systems dynamics in 1995 for his book Towards Sustainable Development: Essays on System Analysis of National Policy, first published in 1991. The book consists of a series of essays from the work of Dr. Saeed and his colleagues on sustainable development, with a particular focus on a developing country perspective. The second edition of this book, which includes additional and updated works, is now available online in digital format.
Towards Sustainable Development provides insight into how we
can understand policy and modern development dilemmas. The book has
served internationally as a reader for courses on the dynamics of
economic development and was an important attempt to apply systems
dynamics tools to the design of public policy for sustainable
development. Each chapter of the book is a self-contained essay that
can be read independently of the other essays.
The book is divided into three main parts. The first section provides the conceptual foundation for exploring and modeling issues of sustainable development, including the role of political institutions, the production and distribution of income, development planning, and sustainable resource use, and includes the application of this framework using the recommendation of the Club of Rome's study on the limits to growth. The second part of the book extends the concepts developed in the first section to controversies surrounding poverty, technology, entrepreneurship and innovation. The final section of the book includes six case studies from developing countries. The second edition includes the speech given by the author upon receiving the Forrester Award and a new conclusions chapter that emphasizes the learning process involved in the modeling work involved in the research.
