Open Source Geospatial Conference Combines Civil Society, GIS, and Free Software
Open Source Geospatial '05 Conference to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota is a combined meeting of the Open Source MapServer users, the Geospatial conference, and EOGEO (ICT for civil society). The conference offers exciting content and features technologies supported by ifPeople for building community.

Among featured speakers we can mention Markus Neteler who will present a general overview of GRASS Project (full-featured, open source Geographic Information System) and Dirk-Willen van Gulik, President of the Apache Software Foundation.
The event is also combined with the MapServer User Meeting. MapServer is the leading Open Source GIS tool, and is deployed throughout many sectors and industries (this tool is supported by ifPeople, see the note below). The conference will include content relevant to MapServer, including a workshop Getting Started with MapServer.
The conference is also held jointly with EOGEO (Earth Observatin and Geospatial), which promotes the use of geospatial Information and Communication Technologies by Civil Society Organizations and for the well being of individual citizens. The group promotes Open Source and Free Software development and delivery of services for aid agencies, charities, and community groups around the world.

ifPeople and GIS
ifPeople has a special interest in GIS and Open Source technologies. Through its collaboration with client Highland Valley, ifPeople has used MapServer, in combination with other Open Source tools, to provide mapping and searching capabilities through the Internet. The interactive map and database program is designed to build community relations and enable exchange of services in support of health and wellbeing. The Web interface allows for community members to sign up and offer their services or request services. The map interface can be queried for particular needs and geographic areas (see map below).
