Apple is urged to take environmental responsibility
Apple is being targeted for not having implemented any recycling program or developed a sound strategy to manage its e-waste. The Computer Takeback Campaign is a national coalition of organizations that has recently launched a campaign aimed at getting Apple to think differently.
As is the case with many other companies in the electronics industry, Apple has not implemented any recycling program nor developed a sound strategy to manage its e-waste. Last years annual report card on electronics pollution released by the Computer Takeback Campaign (see ifPeople´s article on CTB report) urged manufacturers to take responsibility for the environmental performance of their products which should include the introduction of environmental effective collection, disassembly, reuse and recycling measures. Now, this national coalition of organizations is organizing a campaign aimed at getting Apple to think differently.
Apple Computer is one of the major companies that lag behind. Apple´s recently released portable music player iPod has been the target of much criticism for containing poisonous chemicals (lead and mercury) that can cause infertility and brain damage. Besides, the company has not set up a responsible recycling program for its electronic waste.
In an attempt to force Apple to take responsibility for the entire life cycle of its products, Silicon Valley Toxic Coalition will be rallying on April 21st at 9 a.m. at Cupertino, CA before the Apple shareholders meeting. At this meeting, the Computer TakeBack Campaign's will release its own version of Apple's annual report.
