Series features social entrepreneurs around the world
What makes a social entrepreneur differ from a business entrepreneur? According to the Skoll Foundation, social entrepreneurs are motivated by profits while social entrepreneurs are motivated to improve society. The New Heroes, a four-hour PBS series hosted by Robert Redford and sponsored by the Skoll Foundation among others, launched its premier devoted to the work of men and women who have applied their business skills to effect social change. The series intended aim is to "travel the globe to explore the ideas and impact of social entrepreneurs who are making the world a better place".
Although the term social entrepreneur is relatively new, the phenomenon is not. There have always been people searching for innovative ways to solve social problems and benefit humanity. However, social entrepreneurship has gained momentum in recent times and now entrepreneurial leaders receive greater media attention. Besides, they have gained access to new financial and sponsoring sources (see the article on Social Entrepreneur of the Year award) and they have a wider range of resources available, online communities (such as Social Edge and forums where to share their experiences.
