This week, novice and veteran Plone developers, founders and contributors came together in Vienna to attend the Third Annual Plone Conference. Plone is a highly regarded Free Software content management system with a dedicated international community. As was the case with New Orleans 2003 and Vienna 2004, this year’s edition of the Annual Plone Conference is a major worldwide event that promotes open source technologies and contributes to spreading the use of Plone as a powerful professional solution.

The 3-day event consisted of tutorials and talks aimed at two different audiences: track 1 offered Plone “newbies” an opportunity to upgrade their Plone skills while track 2, aimed at veterans with extensive Plone experience, included talks about actual use-cases and demonstrations of the capabilities of the Plone technology.

The conference also continued the work ifPeople helped initiate at the North American regional symposium to market Plone. Some of the same participants led the workshop that engaged the European community in developing ideas and plans for additional, effective marketing plans.

Additionally, a wide array of related events took place before and during the conference including several “sprints” (a focused development session, in which developers pair off together and focus on building a particular subsystem of Plone) together with social happenings such as meetings, dinners and a comedy show and concert.

This year’s conference took place some days after the official release of Plone 2.1, which is now available for download, and provided developers with a chance to talk about the improvements made to this content management system. The conference also included sessions on Zope and Python, Plone’s supporting technologies.
