Online shopping continues to grow, and this year's holiday shopping season has shown double-digit growth over last year's. With more people seeking online goods and services, will your site be prepared to capture this traffic? There are a number of things to do to prepare your site, so this may be a great time for an Internet marketing checkup. Find out easy things you can do to get more business online.

How do people find your site? If you answered, “search engines,” you especially need to pay attention to Search Engine Optimization. If you said, “through links from other sites,” perhaps you need to review your Linking Strategy. If you don't know, don't worry! You can get started right away with Internet marketing and don't need anything more than the desire to learn and some time to implement some best practices.

Is it easy for a user to get what you want them to get?

What should someone do on your site to contribute to your success? Pretend you are new to your site (or ask someone who has never been there before for some help). How easy is it to do that? How many steps does it take? If it is hard to use the site, people will leave quicker than they came.

Are the titles of the pages in your site meaningful, informative, accurate and concise?

Look for the name that shows on the top of the browser window when you look at a page. This is what counts as the title for search engines, and titles are one of the most important pieces of information for search engines. If they are not there or not informative, make them better!

Do you have keyword and description metatags?

You can view the source code on a page of your site to find these (View > Page Source). It will be near the top, if present, before any of the content starts. Looks like: <meta name=”description” content=”This is a description text filler.”>. If you don't have any metatags, make some!

Do you monitor your web site traffic?

Review your web statistics regularly. They can help you find problems on your site, know how well marketing campaigns are working, and tell you what areas of your site are most popular. If you don't have any web statistics, as your hosting provider about it. There are free and open source tools for this.

How many links do you have to your site? How good are they for your site?

The number (and quality of )of links to your site is vital for rankings in Google. You can ask colleagues, partners, friends and more to link to you. But the most valuable links will be from sites that attract your target audience and send you “pre-qualified” leads.

Is your site's code clean?

Type your URL in here, and see if it comes up "clean" or has errors. The more errors, the less well search engines will utilize your site and its content.
