Institute for the Future's FutureCommons is a forum for thought leaders held each month. This month, ifPeople's founders will present FairSource as a model for sustainable sourcing of services in today's global economy. The FairSource model is based on fair trade standards and is used by ifPeople to foster responsible microenterprises in South America who engage in software development for ifPeople. FairSource: Ethical Outsourcing of Services
Though Fair Trade has grown prominent in the last decade, fair trade organizations have not addressed trade in services, which make up over half the global economy. With the tremendous rise in offshore outsourcing of services - from IT to tax processing - FairSource is a response that offers a framework for ethical outsourcing.FairSource is a standard and innovative business model for trade in services based on principles of fair trade, access to opportunity, and sustainability. ifPeople has developed FairSource as a means to comprehensive, mutually-beneficial relationships that promote sustainable livelihoods and responsible enterprise development. ifPeople utilizes the FairSource standard to enable viable enterprises in Latin America that deliver high quality Information Technology services and also are socially responsible.
