October features Fair Trade and green initiatives

by Admin last modified 2006-10-08 07:32

Once again, the month of October is packed with interesting events. Besides the month-long celebrations of the 3rd annual Fair Trade Month, the city of Washington will be hosting the Green Fest. ifPeople joins the thousands of companies and consumers that advocate for a responsible equitable approach to trade relationships and will be once again speaking at this 2006 edition of the Green Festival to take place October 14-15.

Fair Trade Month

The Fair Trade Month is organized by TransFair USA, a nonprofit organization and one of twenty members of Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO). In its web page, the organization offers manufacturers, retailers and supporters of Fair Trade products different options and resources for celebrating and promoting Fair Trade (What is Fair Trade?). Besides, this 2006 edition includes the opportunity to win a 8-day trip for two to visit Fair Trade farms in Costa Rica. Among the things you can do to boost the movement, Transfair suggests hosting a Fair Trade Film screening (a number of short videos are available at its web page) and join the “adopt-a-supermarket” campaign to get your local supermarket to offer a greater variety of products carrying the Fair Trade label.

Green Fest 2006

The Green Festival in Washington DC will bring you food, music, films, panels and lectures about a number of environmental, political and social issues. Chris Johnson, co-founder of ifPeople, is among the dozen speakers invited to participate in this 2006 edition. ifPeople`s cofounder will be presenting “Beyond Fair Trade Chocolate” on Sunday 13. The presentation will explore the role of fair trade in service businesses and feature FairSource, ifPeople's initiative to create a network of social enterprises in South America for software development using a fair trade model. This innovative business model for trade in services developed by ifPeople on the basis of principles of fair trade, access to opportunity, and sustainability is gaining more and more attention and ifPeople has been recently asked to present FairSource at the Natural Leaders Award and Conference and FutureCommons.
