MOTTO Magazine: Uniting Values-Driven Companies and Individuals
This year's Bioneers Conference in Atlanta included a session on socially responsible business leadership hosted by the locally-based MOTTO Magazine (formerly Worthwhile Magazine). This career-oriented magazine was the brainchild of two prior employees of The Wall Street Journal, Anita Sharpe and Kevin Salwen. Dissatisfied with modern business media and concerned with its lack of focus on social responsibility, they created MOTTO Magazine to link companies and individuals with similar values, passions and goals.
The Need for MOTTO
Sharpe and Salwen believe the most basic human desire is to find a career which one enjoys and which positively impacts society. The co-founders of
MOTTO noticed the absence of this idea in traditional media, at a time they believed the role of companies in society was greater than ever and that individuals were feeling overwhelmingly dissatisfied with the passion in their professional lives. Therefore, the themes throughout MOTTO content--purpose, passion and profit--combined these desires of companies and individuals. MOTTO Today
After recently relaunching as MOTTO, the magazine is now a great resource for content including the print version, online blog and podcasts. Articles include ideas on how to integrate socially responsible business practices into a company seeking profit in addition to purpose, how to guarantee that the environment, the community and the employees remain a priority in a company's mission, and how to create a feeling of community and passion at work. In addition, the MOTTO website offers online discussion boards for people to share their experiences, discuss job openings and offer perspective on responsible business practices today. The power and influence of businesses continue to rise in modern society, making the messages of MOTTO especially crucial. The magazine hopes not only to connect individuals and companies with the same goals but also to reach the many individuals who feel uninspired. We all want to feel good about the work we do while also being rewarded for our hard work. MOTTO provides stories and models which help keep this hope alive.
