Launching your web site: Changing your DNS

by Admin last modified 2006-12-04 09:51

Your domain name has DNS addresses that need to be adjusted to make your site display properly. This document explains how to do that, and provides a specific example for those clients using Godaddy.com to manage domains.

The DNS Address of your domain determines where requests for www.yourdomain.com actually resolve to. As an example, if you type in www.yourdomain.com in your browser, it could go to ifPeople's server, another server, your computer...So we need to make sure the DNS addresses are set correctly so your site at ifPeople shows up. Note: This documentation is only for clients that do not manage their own DNS, which is usually the case.

Steps to update your DNS

  1. Find out where your domain is managed. Whenever you purchased your domain, you used a third-party service that will offer some domain management tools (including the one we need). You may have to ask someone else at your organization; a common service is Godaddy.com, which will be used as an example.
  2. Log into your domain management area. For example, go to Godaddy.com --> log in using customer number and password.
  3. Find the domain(s) you will use for the site at ifPeople. Godaddy.com: Domain Names --> Manage Domains. Click on the domain name.
  4. In the details of the domain, find the section about "Names Servers" or "DNS address" for the domain. This will be 1-3 lines that include IP addresses (such as 192.168.2.1 or a.dns.domain.com).
  5. Edit the DNS addresses for the domain to point to:
         NS1.SIXFEETUP.COM
         NS2.SIXFEETUP.COM
  6. Save the settings
Almost done! Last steps:
  1. Find out how your email is managed. If it is not at 6ftup, then you will need to find out the DNS MX record for your email service. Please contact your email provider and request the MX record information.
  2. Contact ifPeople to notify of the change of DNS. Please send us the name of any/all domains you have changed and also the MX records for email. Note: failure to send MX records can result in disruption in your email service.
  3. ifPeople will take care of the rest of the setup changes necessary and notify you of the changes. Please note that DNS changes can take up to 36 hrs to propogate. During that time, you may see the domain working properly and not.
